Affliction
Planetary StatesA condition where a planet is under stress, usually due to difficult aspects (like squares or oppositions) from malefic planets (Mars, Saturn) or being in a difficult house.
Deep Dive:An afflicted planet may struggle to express its positive qualities, often manifesting as challenges or obstacles in the areas of life it rules.
Air Signs
Signs & HousesThe element representing intellect, communication, and social connection. The Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
Deep Dive:People with dominant Air placements are often thinkers, communicators, and social connectors. They value logic, ideas, and objectivity.
Angular Houses
Signs & HousesThe 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses of a chart. These are considered the most powerful houses where planetary energy manifests most visibly.
Deep Dive:Planets in angular houses have "accidental dignity" and are capable of producing significant effects in the native's life.
Applying Aspect
AspectsAn aspect where the faster-moving planet is approaching the exact degree of the aspect with a slower planet.
Deep Dive:Applying aspects are considered stronger and more event-oriented than separating aspects, as the energy is building up towards a peak.
Ascendant (Rising Sign)
Signs & HousesThe zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. It represents the persona, physical body, and first impressions.
Deep Dive:The Ascendant sets the structure for the entire house system. It is often described as the "mask" one wears or the lens through which one views the world.
Aspect
AspectsThe geometric angle formed between two planets or points in a birth chart (e.g., 0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°).
Deep Dive:Aspects describe the dynamic relationship between planetary energies. "Soft" aspects (trine, sextile) facilitate flow, while "hard" aspects (square, opposition) create tension and growth.
Asteroids
Celestial BodiesSmall celestial bodies used in modern astrology to add nuance to chart interpretation. Major asteroids include Chiron, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, and Vesta.
Astrology
ConceptsThe study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.
Benefic
Planetary StatesPlanets traditionally associated with positive, expansive, or harmonious influence. Jupiter (Greater Benefic) and Venus (Lesser Benefic) are the primary benefics.
Deep Dive:While generally positive, benefics can sometimes lead to excess or laziness if not balanced by discipline.
Big Three
ConceptsA modern term referring to the Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign (Ascendant) as the core pillars of personality.
Birth Chart (Natal Chart)
ChartsA map of the sky at the exact moment and location of a person's birth. It serves as a blueprint for their potential, personality, and life path.
Black Moon Lilith
Celestial BodiesA mathematical point (not a physical body) representing the apogee of the Moon's orbit. It symbolizes raw, primal feminine energy, rebellion, and taboo.
Deep Dive:Lilith represents where we refuse to submit to others' will and where we may experience shame or repression before finding empowerment.
Cadent Houses
Signs & HousesThe 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses. These follow Succedent houses and are traditionally seen as areas of mental processing and preparation.
Cardinal Signs
Signs & HousesThe signs that initiate the seasons: Aries (Spring), Cancer (Summer), Libra (Autumn), and Capricorn (Winter).
Deep Dive:Cardinal energy is initiating, active, and ambitious. People with strong Cardinal placements are often self-starters and leaders.
Chart Ruler
ConceptsThe planet that rules the Ascendant sign. It is considered the most personal planet in the chart and a primary influence on the life path.
Deep Dive:For example, if you are a Leo Rising, the Sun is your Chart Ruler. Its house and sign placement are critically important.
Chiron
Celestial BodiesA comet/minor planet known as the "Wounded Healer." It represents our deepest spiritual wound and the potential to heal others through our own healing journey.
Combust
Planetary StatesA condition where a planet is within 8-10 degrees of the Sun. The planet is said to be "burnt up" or overpowered by the Sun's brilliance.
Deep Dive:A combust planet may struggle to express itself objectively or may operate largely subconsciously.
Composite Chart
ChartsA chart created by calculating the midpoints between two people's planetary positions. It represents the relationship itself as a third entity.
Conjunction
AspectsA major aspect where two planets are approximately 0° apart (in the same sign). Their energies blend and fuse together.
Deep Dive:This is the most powerful aspect. The nature of the conjunction depends on the planets involved (e.g., Sun-Jupiter is expansive; Saturn-Mars is restrictive).
Cusp
Signs & HousesThe dividing line between two houses or signs. A planet "on the cusp" is very close to the beginning of the next house or sign.
Decan
Signs & HousesA subdivision of a zodiac sign. Each sign spans 30 degrees and is divided into three 10-degree decans, each having a sub-ruler.
Deep Dive:Decans add nuance to Sun signs. For example, the first 10 days of Scorpio are ruled purely by Pluto/Mars, while the next 10 have Pisces/Neptune influence.
Descendant (DC)
Signs & HousesThe point directly opposite the Ascendant on the western horizon. It marks the cusp of the 7th House of partnerships.
Deep Dive:While the Ascendant is "Self," the Descendant is "Other." It describes the qualities we seek in partners and those we may disown in ourselves.
Detriment
Planetary StatesA planet located in the sign opposite the one it rules (e.g., Mars in Libra). It is considered to be in a challenging position.
Deep Dive:A planet in detriment isn't "bad," but it has to work harder or in unconventional ways to express its energy.
Direct Motion
Planetary StatesThe normal forward movement of a planet through the zodiac degrees (counter-clockwise).
Domicile
Planetary StatesThe sign(s) a planet rules (e.g., Moon in Cancer). A planet in domicile is at home, strong, and stable.
Earth Signs
Signs & HousesThe element representing practicality, stability, and material reality. The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.
Deep Dive:Earth energy is grounded, dependable, and focused on tangible results. It governs the physical body, resources, and work.
Eclipse
Celestial BodiesA powerful lunation occurring near the Lunar Nodes. Solar Eclipses are supercharged New Moons; Lunar Eclipses are supercharged Full Moons.
Deep Dive:Eclipses are often associated with fated events, sudden changes, and significant beginnings or endings.
Elements
ConceptsThe four fundamental energies of the zodiac: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Each sign belongs to one element.
Ephemeris
TechniquesA table of values that gives the positions of astronomical objects in the sky at a given time.
Exaltation
Planetary StatesA sign where a planet functions exceptionally well, often better than in its own home sign (e.g., Moon in Taurus).
Fall
Planetary StatesThe sign opposite a planet's exaltation. The planet is considered weak or uncomfortable here (e.g., Moon in Scorpio).
Fire Signs

Fixed Signs

Deep Dive:Fixed energy is stabilizing, persistent, and sometimes stubborn. These signs are known for their endurance and ability to sustain projects.
Grand Cross
AspectsA rare aspect pattern involving four planets in a cross shape, all square to each other and in opposition pairs.
Deep Dive:This is a high-tension pattern that creates significant challenges but also generates immense drive and potential for achievement.
Grand Trine
AspectsA harmonious aspect pattern where three planets form an equilateral triangle, all 120° apart (trine) to each other.
Deep Dive:Grand Trines indicate natural talent and flow in the element involved (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water), but can sometimes lead to complacency.
Glyph
ConceptsThe symbol used to represent a planet, sign, or aspect in astrology (e.g., ♈ for Aries, ♄ for Saturn).
Hard Aspects
AspectsAspects that create tension and friction: the Square (90°) and Opposition (180°). Conjunctions can also be hard depending on the planets.
Deep Dive:While challenging, hard aspects are the primary drivers of growth, action, and character development in a chart.
Houses
Signs & HousesThe 12 divisions of the sky in a birth chart, each representing a specific area of life (e.g., career, home, relationships).
Deep Dive:Planets show "what" energy is acting, signs show "how" it acts, and houses show "where" in life it manifests.
Imum Coeli (IC)
Signs & HousesThe point opposite the Midheaven, representing the lowest point in the chart and the cusp of the 4th House.
Deep Dive:The IC represents our roots, home, family, private self, and the foundations of our psychological makeup.
Ingress
TechniquesThe moment a planet enters a new zodiac sign.
Inner Planets
Celestial BodiesThe faster-moving planets between the Sun and the Asteroid Belt: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars.
Deep Dive:These planets affect our daily personality, moods, and personal interactions.
Intercepted Sign
Signs & HousesA sign that is completely contained within a house and does not appear on any house cusp (common in Placidus house system at high latitudes).
Deep Dive:Planets in intercepted signs may feel harder to access or express directly, often requiring internal work to unlock.
Juno
Celestial BodiesOne of the major asteroids, associated with marriage, commitment, and long-term partnership.
Jupiter
Celestial BodiesThe planet of expansion, growth, luck, philosophy, and higher learning. It is the traditional ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces.

Kite
AspectsAn aspect pattern formed by a Grand Trine with a fourth planet opposing one of the three, creating a kite shape.
Deep Dive:The "spine" of the kite (the opposition) provides the tension and direction needed to harness the talent of the Grand Trine.
Luminary
Celestial BodiesA term referring collectively to the Sun and the Moon. Unlike other planets, they emit or reflect light directly.
Lunar Nodes
ConceptsThe North Node and South Node. Mathematical points where the Moon's orbit intersects the Ecliptic.
Deep Dive:The South Node represents past karma, comfort zones, and innate talents. The North Node represents our destiny, growth direction, and life lessons.
Malefic
Planetary StatesPlanets traditionally associated with challenge, restriction, or difficulty. Saturn (Greater Malefic) and Mars (Lesser Malefic) are the primary malefics.
Deep Dive:Modern astrology views malefics as necessary teachers that build strength, discipline, and resilience.
Mars

TechniquesThe allowance of degrees from exactness for an aspect to be considered valid. (e.g., a square at 88° is within a 2° orb of 90°).
Outer Planets
Celestial BodiesThe slow-moving generational planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Part of Fortune
TechniquesAn Arabic Part calculated from the positions of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. It represents worldly success and prosperity.
Pluto
