Zodiac compatibility compares broad sign archetypes. Synastry overlays two full birth charts and examines the aspects formed between them. Synastry offers more detail, but neither method can certify that a relationship is healthy or destined.

The 30-second answer

Use sign compatibility for a quick vocabulary of differences. Use synastry for personalized patterns involving Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, angles and houses. Then judge the relationship by communication, consent, reliability and safety.

What each method actually uses

MethodInputsStrengthLimitation
Sun-sign compatibilityTwo Sun signsSimple and accessibleIgnores most of both charts
Element/modal comparisonSeveral sign categoriesShows broad stylesStill categorical
SynastryTwo calculated natal chartsReveals inter-chart aspectsCan become overly deterministic
Composite chartMidpoints of two chartsSymbolizes the relationship unitDoes not replace individual charts

What synastry adds

Moon contacts can describe emotional rhythm, Mercury communication, Venus affection and values, Mars desire and friction, Saturn commitment or constraint, and angle contacts immediacy. The pattern matters more than any single aspect.

A Venus-Mars conjunction may describe attraction, but it does not tell you whether two people communicate respectfully. A Saturn contact may support durability or feel heavy depending on maturity and context.

Why compatibility percentages mislead

One score hides trade-offs and weighting choices. A relationship can contain easy affection and difficult conflict patterns at once. A useful synastry reading explains categories rather than turning them into a pass/fail verdict.

A better way to use the chart

Ask: Where do we misunderstand each other? What kind of reassurance works? Which differences need negotiation? What strengths can we deliberately practice? These questions preserve agency and make symbolism actionable.

Consent and uncertainty

Ask before entering or saving another person's details. If their birth time is unknown, avoid confident house and angle claims. Never use astrology to excuse control, disrespect or unsafe conduct.

A practical synastry conversation

Choose one pattern and discuss observable behavior. If Mercury contacts suggest different communication tempos, ask how each person prefers to receive difficult information. If Moon-Saturn symbolism raises themes of restraint, ask what reassurance and responsibility look like in practice. The goal is not to prove the aspect; it is to make a real agreement.

Include strengths as skills, not permanent protection. An easy Venus contact can support warmth, but warmth still requires attention. A difficult Mars contact can describe friction, but conflict skills can change its expression.

Review the chart together when appropriate. Interpretations made about an absent person can easily become projection, particularly when the reader already wants a specific answer.

When birth time is missing

You can still compare many planet-to-planet aspects, but remove house overlays and angle contacts from confident conclusions. Check whether the Moon changes sign or forms different aspects across the unknown time range. Label both possibilities rather than selecting the more flattering one.

If only one person's time is known, their houses may still receive the other person's planets differently depending on software convention; explain exactly what is being displayed. A reduced but honest comparison is more useful than a full-looking synastry report built on a noon placeholder.

Bottom line

Synastry is richer than Sun-sign matching because it compares real charts, but relationship quality is lived, not calculated. Use it as a conversation map—not a verdict.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is synastry more accurate than zodiac compatibility?+

Synastry is more personalized because it compares many placements and inter-chart aspects. Its interpretation is still symbolic and cannot measure trust, safety, communication or relationship skills.

Can incompatible zodiac signs have a good relationship?+

Yes. Sun-sign categories are broad and no pairing determines relationship quality. Values, behavior, circumstances and the rest of both charts matter.

What do I need for a synastry chart?+

You need both birth dates and places; exact birth times improve house and angle analysis. Obtain the other person's consent before saving their data.
