It compares the birth charts using the Ashtakoot system, scoring 8 factors (Kutas) out of a maximum of 36 Gunas — computed almost entirely from each partner’s Moon sign and birth Nakshatra.

A minimum of 18 out of 36 Gunas is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage. Scores of 25–32 are very good, and 33–36 is excellent (rare). Below 18, tradition recommends a deeper consultation — though specific doshas and their cancellations matter more than the headline number.
