📖 About Navratri

Navratri is a nine-night festival celebrating the divine feminine power of Goddess Durga. Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, October 11 and culminates with Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20.

✨ Significance

Navratri celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The nine nights honor nine forms of the goddess, each representing different aspects of feminine divine power. The festival is celebrated across India with regional variations. In Western India, it's marked by Garba and Dandiya Raas dances. In Eastern India, particularly Bengal, elaborate Durga Puja pandals are created. In South India, Golu (display of dolls) is a key tradition. Spiritually, Navratri is a time for fasting, prayer, and self-reflection, allowing devotees to cleanse themselves and seek the goddess's blessings.

📜 Mythology & Stories

According to mythology, the demon Mahishasura had obtained a boon that he could not be killed by any god or man. He terrorized the heavens and earth. The gods combined their powers to create Goddess Durga, who battled the demon for nine nights and days, finally slaying him on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Dussehra. Each of the nine nights is dedicated to a different form of the goddess: 1. Shailaputri - Daughter of the mountains 2. Brahmacharini - The ascetic goddess 3. Chandraghanta - The one with a moon-shaped bell 4. Kushmanda - Creator of the universe 5. Skandamata - Mother of Skanda (Kartikeya) 6. Katyayani - Daughter of sage Katyayana 7. Kalaratri - The dark night 8. Mahagauri - The extremely fair one 9. Siddhidatri - Bestower of supernatural powers
