📖 About Diwali

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is the most celebrated Hindu festival marking the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. In 2026, Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8.

✨ Significance

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps (diyas) to welcome their beloved prince, creating a tradition that continues to this day. For many, Diwali also celebrates the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. Devotees believe that Lakshmi visits clean, well-lit homes on Diwali night, blessing them with wealth and good fortune. The festival also marks the Hindu New Year for many communities, particularly in Gujarat and some parts of North India. It represents new beginnings, hope, and the triumph of knowledge over ignorance.

📜 Mythology & Stories

According to the Ramayana, after Lord Rama defeated the demon king Ravana and rescued Sita from Lanka, he returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya. The citizens celebrated his return by lighting thousands of earthen lamps, illuminating the entire city. Another legend connects Diwali to Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. The day before Diwali, known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali, celebrates this triumph. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of Moksha (liberation) by Lord Mahavira in 527 BCE. Sikhs celebrate it as Bandi Chhor Divas, commemorating Guru Hargobind's release from Mughal imprisonment.
