Maha Shivaratri 2026

महाशिवरात्रि

📅 Sunday, 15 February 2026

📖 About Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is the great night of Lord Shiva, celebrated with night-long vigil, fasting, and worship. In 2026, it falls on Sunday, February 15.

Significance

Maha Shivaratri, meaning "The Great Night of Shiva," is one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe strict fast and stay awake all night, performing puja during the four prahar (quarters) of the night. The festival holds deep spiritual significance as it marks the night when Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction (Tandava). It's also believed to be the night when Shiva and Parvati got married. For spiritual seekers, Shivaratri represents the overcoming of darkness and ignorance, with the night-long vigil symbolizing the ascent from material consciousness to spiritual awakening.

📜 Mythology & Stories

Multiple legends are associated with Shivaratri: 1. **Samudra Manthan**: When poison (Halahala) emerged during the churning of the ocean, Shiva drank it to save the universe. The poison turned his throat blue (Neelakantha), and the night is celebrated in his honor. 2. **Divine Marriage**: This night marks the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, representing the union of consciousness and energy. 3. **Lingodbhav**: On this night, Shiva first manifested himself as an infinite pillar of light (Linga) to settle a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu about supremacy. 4. **The Hunter's Tale**: A hunter accidentally stayed awake all night on a Bael tree above a Shivalinga, unknowingly performing worship and was blessed with liberation.
