The festival transcends blood relations - it can be observed between anyone who shares a protective bond. Historically, women have tied rakhis to men seeking their protection, creating a brother-like bond. The festival falls on Shravana Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan, which is considered one of the most auspicious months.

Several legends are associated with Raksha Bandhan: 1. **Draupadi and Krishna**: When Krishna injured his finger, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to bandage it. Touched by this, Krishna promised to protect her. This bond was fulfilled during the dice game when Krishna provided her an endless sari. 2. **Yama and Yamuna**: Yamuna tied a rakhi to Yama, the god of death, who was so moved that he granted her immortality and declared that any brother who received a rakhi and promised to protect his sister would become immortal. 3. **Rani Karnavati and Humayun**: The widowed queen of Chittor sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, seeking his protection against Bahadur Shah. Though Humayun came too late to save her, the incident became a symbol of the rakhi bond.
